Cowichan Lake Air Quality

Updated:

The actual air quality at the lake right now, measured by an IQAir AirVisual Outdoor monitor at Aera Cabins in Youbou, US EPA AQI and fine-particulate readings from the north shore of Cowichan Lake itself, not an estimate modelled from a distant station.

What the particulate sizes mean

PM2.5 , particles under 2.5 microns (wildfire smoke, combustion). The main health metric, and what drives the AQI here.
PM10 , particles under 10 microns (dust, pollen). Usually low right at the water.
PM1 , ultrafine particles under 1 micron; the most sensitive early indicator of distant smoke.

Air Quality Questions

Does Cowichan Lake get wildfire smoke in summer?

Vancouver Island, including the Lake Cowichan and Youbou area, generally sees less wildfire smoke than mainland British Columbia, but smoke from distant fires can drift over the region for a few days in late July through September in some years. Conditions change quickly and many summers stay clear. Because forecasts for the lake are often generalized from distant stations, we measure air quality on-site with an IQAir AirVisual Outdoor monitor at the property, so guests can check the actual PM2.5 reading rather than a regional estimate.

About this data

An IQAir AirVisual Outdoor monitor on the dock at Aera Cabins tracks fine particulates (PM2.5) right at the water, so you can see for yourself how clean the lake air is, and check real conditions during rare regional smoke events instead of relying on a regional estimate.
